How to choose the right life jacket buoyancy level for your activity

The buoyancy rating of a life jacket is measured in Newtons (N). A higher value indicates greater lifting force in water. In rescue operations, personnel often wear clothing and carry equipment, requiring additional buoyancy margin. Professional rescue life jackets typically require a total buoyancy of at least 150 N.

In addition to buoyancy, prioritize fabric abrasion resistance, accessory configuration, and adjustable sizing. High-strength nylon resists abrasion from rocks and floating debris; the front rescue D-ring connects life lines and quick-release devices, a critical component for coordinated team rescues.

Reflective strips and other visibility accessories should be standard on rescue life jackets to improve recognition at night and in turbid water.

When configuring, organize by water operation type: calm water, rapid rescue, and ice rescue each require distinct protective and thermal insulation standards. Ice and cold-water operations also need specialized ice rescue suits.
